Namun, berbeda dengan musik blues, musik jazz pada dasarnya adalah musik instrumental spontan.

Kreativitas spontan itu tampak pada permainan improvisasi para pemainnya. Improvisasi adalah tanggapan langsung di tempat atas situasi musikal. Karakteristik permainan improvisasi musik jazz tampak pada pendekatan individual cara bermain para musisinya. Jazz sering dianggap sebagai perkembangan lebih lanjut dari permainan piano yaitu dengan munculnya teknik sinkopasi. Sinkopasi merupakan suatu teknik permainan yang menunda jatuhnya ketukan nada dari suatu melodi atau lagu. Teknik sinkopasi kemudian diiringi ketukan irama yang tetap sehingga membentuk kesan bertentangan yang dinamis.

Teknik sinkopasi yang berasal dari musik ragtime bertemu dengan unsur blue note yang menjadi ciri khas musik blues. Ketiga teknik permainan: improvisasi, sinkopasi, dan blue note membentuk trilogi yang menjadi ciri khas utama musik jazz. Pada awalnya jazz hanyalah aktivitas bermusik spontan dengan alat musik. Nyanyian kerja, spiritual, dan blues menjadi bentuk awal musik jazz. Tema musik jazz diambil dari musik rakyat, musik hiburan, atau ide spontan.

Melodi pokok jazz lalu dikembangkan dalam permainan improvisasi yang disebut chorus, yaitu bagaimana permainan improvisasi sepanjang 32 birama yang bertolak dari suatu progresi akor atau harmoni. Dari improvisasi jazz ini berkembang gaya swing, semacam dorongan rasa khas dalam musik jazz. Swing merupakan dorongan perasaan untuk memberi kesan mengayun, menghentak, atau mendorong suatu perasaan ritmis dinamis yang membuat musik jazz terasa ’jazy’ atau nge-jazz.

Perasaan swing ini berhubungan dengan gerak dan tekanan hitungan ritme dalam musik jazz yang disebut detak atau hentakan. Perasaan swing (mengayun) menjadi unsur keempat yang menjadi ciri khas musik jazz (Syukur, 2005).
